How It Works

Similar to a regular blood pressure monitor, a cuff is worn around the upper arm. A small, portable device is connected to the cuff and usually worn on the belt or in a pocket. You can continue to go about your daily activities while the device takes measurements. It inflates the cuff at regular intervals and records the readings.

For 24 hours, the monitor will take a reading every 30 minutes. The device will store all of these readings.

Return to Mullany's Kilminchy Pharmacy with your monitor and your results will be uploaded and analysed. We will be able to assess blood pressure patterns and identify issues such as:

  • Hypertension: when the force of the blood against the artery walls is consistently too high.
  • White-coat hypertension: elevated blood pressure readings only in a clinical setting but normal at other times.
  • Nocturnal hypertension: Elevated blood pressure during sleep.

Detailed information on blood pressure variations throughout the day and night is provided to your pharmacist giving insights into your blood pressure profile and you will be advised whether you should consider attending your GP for a further consultation. Two copies of your results will be provided to you - one for you and one to give to your doctor. Your GP can make an informed decision about your cardiovascular health and discuss a treatment plan with you if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everyone has blood pressure. It is the amount of work that your heart must do to pump blood around the body. To measure your level of blood pressure two recordings are assessed - the systolic pressure which is when the pressure is at its highest as your heart muscle squeezes out the blood from your heart and the diastolic pressure which is when your heart relaxes, and allows the blood to flow back into your heart.

Average blood pressure is usually about 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic). The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get it measured using a blood pressure monitor as most people with high blood pressure will not notice any symptoms. If it goes untreated, it may lead to conditions like heart disease or a stroke so it’s a good idea to get your blood pressure checked every so often.

If you want to simply check your blood pressure reading by getting a single blood pressure check you can do this by availing of our free walk-in Blood Pressure Check Service with our pharmacist in store.

If your BP is elevated, it would generally be advised to avail of our at-home 24-hour BP monitoring service to properly monitor your blood pressure and confirm whether the elevated reading during your original consultation was just a once-off.

This is a device used to continuously measure and record a person's blood pressure over 24 hours. This type of monitoring is also known as ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM).

It provides a more comprehensive and accurate picture of blood pressure fluctuations throughout the day and night compared to single measurements taken at a consultation.
